Dropped my damn S4 on the ground and shattered the screen. That is going to be 200 bucks out of my pocket. Plus I shattered my wife's S4 screen while we were tailgating by gesturing too wildly (alcohol might have been involved). This is why I stuck with Blackberry's with keyboards for so long.

...how?

I have never broken a single screen on all of my phones, and I still don't understand how people seem to break theirs so easily. Am I just buying the right phones? Even when dropped on cement or hard wood the screens just don't break, but I always hear how fragile they're supposed to be.

To make you feel better, here is another S4 that has been dropped to the ground

I honestly have no idea. I've never broken one before and I have dropped this phone from 6+ feet off the ground. It has a case too so I have no idea how it happened. Which makes me even angrier.

So, now you get a proper case for some added (but unobtrusive) protection?

I had a Rinkge Fusion case for my Nexus 4 (but that didn't play well with the Crumpler sleeve) which worked really well, the brief time I had it. They have one for the S4 as well.

And they happen to be on sale now: http://www.rearthusa.com/new-samsung-ga…

EDIT : Oh, nevermind, I see your reply now, that the phone had a case already.

That is so weird. Makes me wonder if there are some lax manufacturer standards or non-visible flaws in the screen design that break under certain directional stress.

Yea I definitely think it has to be dropped at a certain angle.

Yea my case is almost identical to that one. Very thin and I thought it was amazing. It must've just hit at a weird angle because I've dropped from much higher heights before.

Going to cost more than $200 to fix that eyesore...

If its already dead, why not try replacing the screen on it? Worst thing that could happen is you break it. I was able to replace the screen (technically called a digitizer, IIRC) on my first gen droid. It was a bit intimidating, but as long as you keep track of what screw goes where, it's very doable. I use mine as a music player for my workshop now.

Well I'm still able to use it. So it's not a total loss, but I definitely can't last very long with it cracked this bad. I did look up some tutorials on removing and replacing the screen, but I also read you can't get replacement gorilla glass yourself. Only Samsung has it and they won't sell it to you.

I think it's possible to find the entire front assembly on sale though. I've never seen people crack the screen of any Samsung phone and replace only the glass. (I got a Note 2 after my iPhone was stolen and I did all the research on these new screen-shattering when you sneeze holding these kinds of young whippersnapper cellphones.) And what I found from it is you have to cover the front of the cracked screen with tape, remove a couple screws from the back, and carefully life the entire screen off and replace pretty much the entire top half of the phone.

At least for the S3 and Note 2.
